SCHOLARSHIP

The Columbia (MD) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. offers scholarships and awards to African-American high school seniors who have excelled academically and plan to pursue a college degree. Students must be residents of Howard County and attend a Howard County high school.

General Scholarship qualifications are as follows:

  • Must be an African-American high school senior residing in Howard County and attending a Howard County high school.
  • Must plan to enter college in Fall 2025.
  • Must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Must have performed school and/or community service.
  • Must have demonstrated leadership abilities specific to the requirements of the scholarship or award for which you are applying.

FUTURE EDUCATOR SCHOLARSHIP

This award is given as a tribute to one component of our Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, education. It is also in recognition of Delta’s membership, consisting of educated women. Qualifying students must plan to major in Education.

DR. BETTY SHABAZZ SCHOLARSHIP

This award is given in honor of Dr. Betty Shabazz, a notable member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Dr. Betty Shabazz was an influential activist and civil rights leader who dedicated her life to championing women’s and children’s rights. As a registered nurse, Dr. Betty Shabazz went on to later earn her master’s in public health and doctorate in education administration. In support of increasing diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), qualifying students must plan to major in the field of STEM.

GILDA LEWIS PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD

This award is given in honor of Gilda Lewis, a past president of the Columbia (MD) Alumnae Chapter, who dedicated her life to public service.

CELONIA B. WALDEN AWARD FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

This award is given in honor of Celonia B. Walden, a charter member and past president of the Columbia (MD) Alumnae Chapter. Qualifying students must plan to major in the Performing Arts and have demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities in the community and school.

BOOK MONEY AWARD

This award may be given to students who applied for one of the above listed scholarships and/or awards and was not selected as a recipient, but whose achievements warrant recognition.

NOTE: IF YOUR MOTHER IS A MEMBER OF DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC., YOU ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR THESE SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS.
